Ava O’Brien is a recent graduate of Salem State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music during the Spring of 2026. She is a passionate trombonist from the South Shore of Massachusetts with a strong commitment to musical growth. Although she has been playing the trombone for just seven years, her determination and love for music have driven her to pursue a career as a professional classical trombonist and teacher. O’Brien is known to approach every musical opportunity with focus, curiosity, and an unwavering dedication to her craft.
An active performer in both orchestral and jazz settings, O’Brien serves as principal trombonist in her ensembles, including the Salem State University Orchestra, Band (2022–present), and Salem Community Orchestra and Band (2024–present). She has also performed with the Salem State Jazz Improvisation Ensemble, where she was featured as a soloist every semester for 4 years. During her time at Salem State, she has studied closely with renowned trombonist Philip Swanson, and continues to study with him currently. Outside of Salem State, she has served as principal trombone with the Tufts University Jazz Orchestra under Joel LaRue Smith (2025–2026) and the CBDNA Intercollegiate Band (2026).
In addition to her performance experience, O’Brien has demonstrated a growing interest in leadership and musicianship beyond the trombone. She has conducted the Salem Community Orchestra and the Salem State University Band, both being experiences that deepened her understanding of ensemble communication and musical direction as well as an excitement to continue.
